National Honor Society
Benton Chapter of National Honor Society Guidelines and Expectations
The following requirements and expectations will take effect as of present; all current Benton National Honor Society members must adhere to these expectations, aligned to the four pillars of National Honor Society, in order to maintain membership within the society. Membership to the society is a meritable achievement that holds great value for students with employment and postsecondary education plans following graduation.
Application and Scholarship
Sophomore and junior students who hold a grade point average of 93 or above will be invited to apply for membership to Benton’s chapter of National Honor Society. These will be due at the beginning of each school year. Only those who apply will be considered for membership.
A GPA of 93 must be maintained through the end of senior year for current and prospective inductees in order to graduate with Benton’s National Honor Society membership. Current members will be held to a 90 GPA requirement they were inducted with.
As per the NHS National Constitution, these students will be approved to enter the society through the Faculty Council.
Leadership
Students accepted into the society are expected to illustrate leadership roles through involvement with school organizations, extracurricular activities, and/or community presence.
Character
Current and prospective members must exercise adherence to school wide behavioral expectations and school policies. Failure to do so can result in expulsion from the society. Details can be found in the NHS National Constitution, linked on the website above.
Service
Students who are approved to be eligible for membership must complete 10 community service hours by March’s induction ceremony to maintain membership. Failure to do so will result in the inability to be inducted.
Current members must earn a total of 20 community service hours by May 25, 2023 to maintain or graduate with membership and avoid being removed from the society.
All official members will be added to a Google Classroom where service opportunities will be posted. Each member is responsible for finding, monitoring, and signing up for his or her own service hours.
Service hours must be community oriented. They may NOT be earned through the following:
Babysitting
Favors for families/friends
Activities that involve payment
Events that students are required to attend for a grade/outside activities
Dismissal from Society
A member’s dismissal from the society due to failure to uphold NHS standards will be decided by the Benton National Honor Society Faculty Council. For specific information on this process, please refer to the NHS National Constitution from the NHS website.
